must take charge. She's had her detox, counseling, the whole nine yards. It is then society's responsibility to offer her a chance to succeed (not GIVE success, simply offer the chance) and her's to choose to succeed. Also (I would have thought this obvious, but perhaps it needed stating) involuntary cases (such as kidnapping and forced prostitution under drugs) belong to another class of resolution altogether. That's what "victim's OWN CHOICE" meant to me.
Such resolution, for me, involves removing the people who do these things from the gene pool (killing them without exception, to avoid cute little euphemisms), and every possible rehabilitation effort for their victims. There would also be other exceptions, every time relating to whether their situation is truly their own responsibility.
I will NEVER forget one New Year's Eve, in an El Paso, Tx. Salvation Army mission. Some of us stayed up to see the New Year in and were just chatting about life. Somehow the subject came up about what to do to get out of this rotten lifestyle.
There were lots of comments about just moving on to another city and living in their missions, and other comments about other ways to live off society without contributing anything, in perpetuity. Then one man said "Sally's (Salvation Army) a real sweet gal. She takes care of me, she feeds me and gives me clothes and a place to sleep. She even gives me some work so I can get my bottle! Why should I ever leave?"
Please God, let someone kill me if I ever go that way! |
