it does seem that you take a person who remains in geniune disagreement with you on a social or moral issue to be not listening to reason.

This is of course not limited to you, Illiad himself did it a few posts up, and in general a lot of partisan politics is simply downplaying or ignoring that fact that a substantial group of people legitimately hold positions in opposition to yours, and aren't simply being misled or misinformed.

Its easy for you to talk to a leftist group, and downplay social conservativism as some shapeless menace, the "fundies" or whatever you want to call it, but what with freedom of speech and a desire for open communication, you are eventually going to run into a real person who really believes differently from you on these issues. You don't have to talk to them if you don't want to, but you can at lease phrase it better than something roughly along the lines of "I don't agree with your opinions therefore you must be narrow minded and I won't be bothered with talking to you".
