discussion (needle exchange) you are taking an action. In the analogy, you are refraining from action. I'll also point out that refusing to defend yourself can, depending on the method chosen to do so, invite attack. The attacker is not justified, but you HAVE invited attack.

I know this because I DID it for many years. I might as well have worn a "Kick Me, PLEASE!" sign on myself. I didn't realize for many years that I invited bullies by my behavior. When I grew up a little more, and was able to maturely refuse to defend myself, I accepted that pain was a consequence of my decision. (Still hurt, but I knew I was doing the right thing.)
