I live in Phoenix and I'm embarrassed that we have this Sheriff and that so many buy his story about being "tough on crime". Maybe you think that criminals deserve all this, but does that include being denied medical care? beatings? restraint devices that kill? Are you in favor of this for those who haven't even been convicted of a crime? Most of the people in Sheriff Joe's jail are arrestees awaiting trial (and are also denied access to a law library). Pima County has had a very successful program to release arrestees on bail or own recognizance saving money on jails and lawsuits, without causing any soaring crime.
As far as him focusing on real criminals, letters to the Editor (in The Arizona Republic, not the New Times) have complained that he isn't providing protection to the outlying parts of the county, blaming budget constraints, but then does a huge prostitution sting in the incorporated areas that have city police to do that. And how about his arresting dozens of deadbeat dads at once (rather than serving them papers one at a time) and parading them before TV cameras. All that's good for is publicity (and more lawsuits when he got some of the wrong people).
He has cost this county millions of dollars, but too many voters still buy his claims. Besides that, it is getting hard to find anyone to run against him because of his underhanded tactics against his opponents. |
