But that's not what they should be. Religion has no business in government, and vice versa. It should be something like this: a civil union is one that carries civil authority, but no religious authority (unless a particular religion chooses to recognize it). A religious union carries whatever that religion wants it to, but is completely and utterly ignored by government. And both unions can be called Marriage. But religions may call theirs something else, or not have them at all. It hardly matters, as they should do whatever their religion tells them to.
