for divorce rates, single-parent households, unwed mothers, children placed in state care, etc., etc., etc.??????
For me, it's simple...
a) If a religious institution does not want to perform marriage ceremonies, then they shouldn't be required to.
b) The term 'marriage' is not 'owned' by religious institutions. We have had 'civil marriages' for a very long time.
c) It's nobody's business what two consenting *adults* do with their private parts. If two adults want to commit to a civil marriage (or religious marriage if their institution condones them), then I'm all for it.
d) I've heard many people say that these marriages can't last. They're only doing it to get certain benefits. Well, in some cases that is probably true. Here's a suggestion: how about applying some form of monetary penalty to *anybody* who gets married and then divorced? Heterosexuals get divorced all the time and nobody gets that upset about the issue. Why then should it be different for homosexuals? One standard, people. That's all there should be. |
