...data class _knows_ by some sort of mechanism that it should be feeding you an integer, because there's no way to know based on the code you currently have. There's nothing in the void pointer itself that indicates this, but I'm sure you already knew that. =)

I would guess that if the integer (that you pass the address of) doesn't contain the correct value after the function returns, then either:

1) the function is expecting a pointer to some other type of variable,
2) the function isn't filling in the integer at all because of some other error condition

But there's no way for us to see that based on what you've given.

Given what you've said, passing the address of an existing integer into the function should work.
