...one of the things that you're forgetting (perhaps a bit conveniently, if I may say so) is that Jesus on many occasions did advocate what amounted to a dramatic departure from the Old Testament laws. Old Testament law recommended "an eye for an eye" -- Jesus recommended that if an enemy strikes us on one cheek, that we offer the other. Old Testament law required that adulteresses be stoned to death -- Jesus advocated "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Old Testament law only required someone to offer forgiveness seven times -- Jesus asked for seventy times seven. Old Testament law stated that the sins of the fathers would be visited on the children -- Jesus offered himself so that this would no longer be necessary. It is true that Jesus was a Jew and hence much of his teachings were based on Old Testament law -- but he also was not reluctant to question and challenge the Pharisees who were so focused on the letter of the law that they neglected the spirit of the law.
