DirectTV internet access by evilsysadmin2004-07-14 09:19:29
It's not DirectTV, it's DirecWay through DirectTV by jayfarm 2004-07-14 13:11:00
A fine difference, but an important one.

Yes, you can get them both through the same dish, but the dish is larger, and oval. Generally it's also white, rather than the more subtle gray/black of DirectTV.

The internet access is generally good, a bit more picky than the TV is, so if he doesn't have a problem with his TV cutting out then the net will be fine.

The up sides:

- Internet out in the middle of nowhere
- Good speeds once a transfer is started
- Relatively good uptime

Down sides:

- Their secuirty is so-so
- Can't use certain forms, since your IP changes per request. This means getting a new AIM SN fails, because you have a different (outside) IP from form page to form page.
- About 1 second lag from click to page start. This matters most in gaming, but can be annoying depending on what he does.
- Expensive investment. It's about $500/$600 to get the equipment.
- Professional install only. You need an FCC license, since it's a 2 way sat system.

Overall I'd rate it good. We had a shakey start with ours, but it's been pretty good so far.

I'm sure you know how to clean that up. ; )
