Alcohol and nicotine's addiction potential varies from person to person.

For mom, social smoking, as you define it, was a large part of her early smoking history. The social aspects of smoking were/are a very big part of her smoking behavior for the middle part of her 55 year smoking history and a major aspect that kept her smoking. Now it's a much smaller part.

One of my brother's alcoholism was similar... a long history where social drinking and the corresponding social aspects were the most important followed by true alcoholism. Thank the gods he's smart enough to be a functional alcoholic. One of my other brother's alcoholism was addiction pure and simple straight out of the chute.Ack! Dirty laundry. *sigh*
