since at least 1208, and probably viewed as a primarily sacramental practice (involving the intervention of the Divine) for a long time before that.

One could also, if one were so inclined, look to the religious offerings that were typically made at Roman weddings. Not that that in itself would prove anything; Latins made a lot of religious offerings (before sports activities for example), and I'm not sure offhand what Roman law and literature have to say about that...might look it up on Perseus though.

But if you were looking for connections between marriage and religions of various brands, you could find them.
