I'm not sure I necessarily agree with talon's argument here, but here's my four-fiftieths of a quarter: There are people of the same religion as the proposers of this amendment who disagree that said religion forbids gay marriage. To these people, this amendment will say: "Sorry, we realize that you are $Religion, but unfortunately you don't know how to practice that religion. Here's how." This puts the Federal government in the position of deciding what sort of behavior is religiously appropriate. (Hmm, that's less closely argued than I thought it was at first. Should I try to patch it up or just discard it?)
