What about by Matthewdba 2004-07-14 11:04:19
the "Western tradition of marriage" argument - that marriage has been around in Western culture longer than (e.g.) Christianity, and that Western culture going back to Greek and Roman times has only recognized formal unions between a man and a woman, even where it was socially acceptable to have relationships (not legally recognized) between members of the same sex? The argument would continue by saying that since this concept of marriage was present in pre-Christian Rome, we are formalizing a concept of law with a long history, not simply codifying Christian doctrine.

Not that I feel that's a *good* justification, but it is one that is not based entirely on religion. I have a different reason to believe that the proposed amendment violates the First Amendment, which I will lay out elsewhere in a bit.
