Progress on the marathon by mortaine 2004-07-14 10:29:07
So, some of you know I'm training for a marathon. Back in March or April, I asked for some advice on building endurance and getting up to "speed." J.D. had some excellent advice, so I wanted to update you all on how it's going. I posted a mini-update a couple of months ago, but thought it was time for another. :)

Training is going REALLY WELL. I ran 10 miles this Sunday morning at a rather hot and un-shaded park. A Gatorade mishap ate my cell phone, but otherwise the run was uneventful, almost fun, even. I am *always* the last person off the course, but hey, I'm a turtle, not a jackrabbit.

I'm at the point now where I run for 8-9 minutes, then walk for 1. On hills, my run time is closer to 2-4 minutes. I can run for up to 15 minutes at a stretch, probably more, but I stop to walk at 15 because I need to re-carb every 15 minutes (I eat 1 Life Saver every 15 minutes to keep my glucose levels good).

Anyway, I'll be running the Portland Marathon on October 3rd this year, 1 year and 2 days after I started at Weight Watchers and decided to take my health more seriously. In September of last year, I could only walk for 15 minutes at a time. Oh, how things have changed.
