          Their ages don't bother me by DesertRat66 2004-07-14 08:01:00
This does: ...almost totally ignorant of foreign cultures and languages... When I was prepping for a temporary assignment to Turkey we spent two weeks learning about the culture there. Some of the things we consider "normal behavior" that they would consider highly offensive was quite shocking. The language barrier was another issue that really bothered me as well. The unit I was with in Germany travelled all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa so knowing all of those languages was impossible but we were never even instructed on rudimentary German before leaving for the home base! Quite frankly I was embarrassed whenever I had to interact with the German citizens. Sure most of them spoke english but I felt it highly disrespectful that we didn't even know how to ask for directions to a bathroom in their language. (and before you ask I was trying to learn German the whole time I was there on my own, it was THAT important to me.)
