Right today, reading ACM's "Ubiquity" which has a title "Why are you stealing that software" ... it pictures a man in (Thailand, Malaysia, ... but NOT Singapore) buying software "for 4$ a piece" being much more expensive than a few years ago. He NEEDS to gain hands-on experience to get a (better) job ... of course he doesn't hand out enough money to please M$ who don't adapt their prices to local income, and demand a price which is only affordable by USA/EU residents (until M$ outsources its software production to Malaysia too, at which point M$ won't have rich customers in EU/USA any more)
Why would Gate rant against "open source" over there, where local govt has NO REASON AT ALL to fight software piracy? Economically it doesn't make sense, politically it doesn't make sense, and the big western corporations are too greedy after all.
At least, Open Source leaves a "legal" market for low-priced articles that work.
OK, that's WHY Gates will put spread his FUD over there, but IF local politicians dare to answer him frankly, they can be sued in USA (at least, it looks that way, that USA-based corporations can sue anyone everywhere before USA courts ... no wonder why same USA doesn't want to recognize real international courts for their personel) |
