Happy Birthday France! by SaleGamine2006-11-19 12:55:59
  not exactly by winged-stone 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Although July 14th is the National day, it doesnt mean birthday. France is much older ;)

Franks turned to be French in middle age. (5th or 9th century...). 842 is accepted as the date were France (and "Germany") were founded.

On July 14th 1789, the Bastille was taken. and most of people think about this event wrt to the National day.

The National Day refers to July 14th 1790, when the 1st constitution was adopted (by the King!) and Bastille entirely destroyed.

Anyway, who cares about this 1year difference ;)

History of France

English wikipedia isnt as detailed as the French one :/

La musique qui marche au pas, cela ne me regarde pas"
