you can unmerge xfree, and emerge xorg-x11, w/o affecting anything depending on xfree. They're completely binary compatible.

I started running xorg before they unmasked it, and I've had to manually tweak my /etc/make.profile/virtuals (unless there's an emerge command to mess with those that I don't know?). Don't know if you'll have to do that or not.
