Going from memory there is a good reason for 42. by AndyA 2004-07-12 15:03:29
The original version of HHGTTG was the radio version, DA was writing the next weeks episode while that weeks was being recorded and broadcast. This caused a few problems when he suffered from his legendary writers block.
e.g. On one episode he made a big deal about slartibartfasts name not being important and then had real trouble coming up with a name for the character. In the end he wrote down all the words he wasn't aloud to use on a BBC radio show and removed letters until it looked like a name. Similarly Hot Black Desiato is named after a London estate agent who have since received a large number of calls complaining that they stole their name from HHGTTG.

He had set up deep though to give this answer before he had any idea what it was going to be. In the end he decided it should be a number and settled on 42 because it was the funniest.

In other words the answer is 42. The question is which number under 100 did Douglas Adams think sounded funniest.
