(Sic) or [sic] is an essayist's device for those times when transliterating or transcribing any quote which has incorrect grammar or spelling. AFAIK the etymology is the Latin word for "thus," as in "it was written thus." Freakazoid has it spot on. For what it's worth, it allows proofreaders and the general audience to skip or pay no attention to pre-existing errors.
