Yes, words like "fascist", "Imperialist", and the like were bandied about and, at least the latter, were probably well deserved. But evenso, no one was seriously concerned that an administration would actually try and high-jack the country.
The closest thing to this was during the Mc Carthy "Unamerican Activities" investigation. I once thought that that would be a low point. Gitmo and the DEA War on Drugs is one step lower. |
