Why do I bother to try install Linux? by Spisefisken2004-07-12 10:52:29
No offense, but.... by dals_rule2004-07-12 11:00:02
Bit general, that. by LionsPhil2004-07-12 11:03:49
      not really.... by dals_rule 2004-07-12 11:20:27
Anyway, my point was that, since modern linux distros (including Mandrake) are easy to install (oftentimes easier than windows...), and the hardware detection/initialization has gotten quite good, the observed problems were quite likely to be caused by a hardware fault of some sort (especially the non-functional floppy...)

make, make modules_install and cp????? I wasn't aware that Mandrake was derived from Gentoo. :-)

I guess my original post may have sounded insulting, but that's really not how I intended it. I've been using linux for years (since 0.9x, as a matter of fact) and windows for longer than that so I know what the learning curve USED to be, but that just isn't the case anymore.

Bottom line: I could have asked for more information and concluded that it was probably just a boot manager problem, possibly aggravated by the presence of an ntfs partition. I still think broken hardware is a likely problem in 90% of os install problems, regardless of whether you're installing windows, linux, or anything else....
