I've stated before that I don't claim to know Kerry will be better, but I stand by the idea that a change of power after 4 years of Bush is a positive idea - certainly not just to get Bush out, but to cycle out the people he has with him.
If we leave Bush & Co in there, things will at best continue along the same path, and at worst, the administration will have no regard for public opinion - not worrying about re-election - and we really will be looking at Amerika, in no joking manner.
Seriously, people have mentioned that so much of this is "not as big a deal" as people are making it out to be. I'm young, compared to some of you, I admit that. But when was the last time that a president and his administration overstepped their bounds and ignored their ostensible responsibilities so frequently that people started talking about them stealing the next election not in whiny figurative terms, but in "no, really, illegally rigging it" terms? That the removal of liberties became so frequent that it no longer fazes anyone, even as near-daily news? That members of highly regarded intelligence agencies (Jane's and CIA most prominent, obviously) have come forward and basically said outright, "Well, nice job - you're screwed, now." That religion and government got so deeply in bed together that vital health information is taken out of sex ed at the religious right's whim, and "the defense of marriage" becomes a divisive national issue?
I don't remember it happening under Clinton. I don't remember it happening under Bush Sr. I was too young to remember much of Reagan, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't near this bad. So when was the last time? Were people just not noticing? They're sure noticing now.
I'm not trying to get you to vote for Kerry - as a sane person I've given up on that. :-p But I am asking - what do you propose we do? |
