The author was interpreting the _actual_ wording of the public statement into what he assumes the public will actually hear or what the speaker was actually thinking.
And at that, I think he did an excellent job.
Your claim that anyone sensible knows the difference between ignorance and stupidity would be an insult to several UFies, IME, since I had to point that out when they got pissed off for being called ignorant. I can't remember, but I think I may have annoyed you with that at one time, too.
I'm sure you knew better, but you _interpreted_ my words to find insult behind them. Whether it was there or not, you thought it was - and that's exactly what most people will get from the comment that blacks are too ignorant to vote properly. |
