Do we suspend Godwin's law? by Slamlander2004-07-12 04:45:28
  OK, can't resist by nitpickin 2004-07-12 08:08:10
1. Have you ever checked into the dead vote in Chicago?
My favorite in 2000 was the small community in Michigan that actually had more votes than registered voters.
Long term, consistent election tampering is as old as elections. Although, I prefer the old style method of beer-for-votes. Seems more honest, somehow.

2. Have you considered what would happen if elections were postponed without an attack happening? Huge negative for Bush. Rest assured all the talk about postponement is to counter a Spain style attack in two ways. First, by making it known that postponing may be an option, it helps to remove any motivation for Al Queda to attack. Second, it also pressures Al Queda to make any attack as close to the election as possible, to reduce the chance of postponement. The closer we get to the election, the more attention will be paid to suspicious behavior. Putting pressure on the bad guys is a good thing, or, would you prefer our government do nothing to prevent an attack similar to the one that killed hundreds in Spain? BTW, from what I've read, only the fringe is talking about cancelling.

Most likely postponement scenario: an attack disrupts the capability of any one state to hold elections in November. As such, that state reschedules election day, and the rest of the states follow suit, out of courtesy.

3 and 4. Brought to mind the man who spent about 5 years in a southern jail without being charged. He couldn't make bail, and the prosecutors couldn't seem to wrap up their investigation. It took a millionaire who read about him to make his bail, on the principle of the thing. Point being, it doesn't take a Patriot Act to abuse power.

5. Living in Ohio, we are the recent beneficiaries of a law making it legal to carry a concealed weapon with a license. Doesn't sound like tightening to me.

6. Not sure what you are referencing, but hasn't travel always been restricted socio-economically? In "Walden", Thoreau made an interesting observation in that a train ride between two neighboring communities cost about a day's wage. It took two hours to walk the distance. Thereby, you had to be making quite some money above the usual day's wage to make the trip by train economically sensible. Just for completeness sake, Thoreau was independently wealthy at the time of his stay at Walden.

7. And this is nothing new in war time.

Considering that we probably never looked more like Nazi Germany than during WWII, perhaps it would be more useful and interesting to look at what makes us different from Nazi Germany, beginning with the fact that we will have an election in the near future in which the current administration is not assured of victory? I would consider such a discussion to merit suspension of Godwin.
