Do we suspend Godwin's law? by Slamlander 2004-07-12 04:45:28
Since, the antics of the current administration is an almost inescapable parallel to early Hitler reign.

Godwin's law, on UseNet was enacted because lots of the ignorant were calling almost everything fascists, including the boiling of eggs. At the time, many of those parallels were beyond ludicrous and those making those parallels were purposely doing so in order to derail other, more legitimate, discussions. In those days, thoughts of serious election tampering and the potential of a pre-emptive dictatorship were considered far-fetched.

I drew the parallels twice today because I honestly believe that they exist and they are real.

  1. Long term consistent election tampering is on the verge of being proven
  2. the current US administration is using fear-mongering to potentially cancel elections.
  3. American Civil Rights are being curtailed via Patriot Act I and other legislation, most of which are unconstitutional.
  4. The US Federal Government is already rogue, it is no longer considered far-fetched for a US citizen to be held (like Germans in Nazi Germany) without trial, laws, or other rights, in direct violation of the US Constitution.
  5. Arms restrictions and other mechanisms necessary for a US citizen's legal right to revolt, are in place and being tightened (Various Gun Control Acts and other activities against the 2d Amendment).
  6. Travel is being restrcted socio-economically, and may soon be formally restricted.
  7. Free association is now forbidden (read PA-I) as is free private communications (CALEA).
We cannot freely discuss these things without seriously running afoul of Godwin's law. I move that we suspend Godwin's law for the duration.
