Just because grandfather Bush was rather too chummy with the buddies of that Austrian corporal does not mean that this has been inspired by his method. There were many small steps which brought Hitler to the power, and they were all rather logical to somebody who understands slimy politics: Make the economy look better than it is by boosting military consumption Make the employment look better than it is by disqualifying groups you dislike from benefits and a place on the statistics Make unemployment disappear by recruiting to oversized army Hide the huge and increasing national deficit by advanced abuse of statistics Denounce foreign discrimination against own superiour products, vocally demanding free trade Denounce unfair foreign competition, make embargo against cheap imported goods Claim family farmers are the heart of the nation while keeping them in financial bondage Have schools concentrate on sports Use schools to indoctrinate children that the own country is superior to all others Use television to give masses the world view you want them to have This is just off the top of my head, thick volumes have been written about how dictatorships evolve out of seemingly free countries. The method gets more and more refined. Yes, I agree that using acts of violence as a pretext to avoid an election would be a last-ditch act of desparation.
