The story was truely hilarious, but the cause of his problem is still likely to be those sharp bends. They do, after all, create reflections and standing waves.
This made me remember the phlogiston theory, which gave a sufficiently good model to explain and predict most known chemical reaction before the discovery of gases. A theory may be completely whacko and still be practically useable in most circumstances. A cabling monkey who believes that speeding electrons might get lost in tight bends will make sure the cable is laid so that it is usable for high frequency communications.
