...can't do any single thing right and this makes it very hard for corporations to figure out who to hire. Second, no matter how many areas you master, there's only so much you can do in the same amount of time and from your employer's point of view, this is what matters. One multitalented person working full-time produces about the same as several others who are good at only one thing and only one of them works at a time. (For sake of illustration, let's ignore any problems with information exchange in this example.) The company doesn't gain much less from average droids then from those experienced in several areas. (Don't forget that we're talking about the same amount of man-hours.) So the wage is similar as well. The only thing you can really count on is bonus for knowledge critical to the company. This bonus is in fact designed for this very purpose of keeping valuable employees. Because truth be told, that's largely all your worth to the company.
I'm in the same shoes. I've been in this company for nearly four years as well, straight from school, no previous experience, but now even though I've made $flagshipproduct and saved several critical projects, when it comes down to normal work, I'm merely somewhat faster than an average employee. So even with significant difference in experience and knowledge, the same difference in salary simply can't be justified.
Tough, I know. But this is the way it is. All you can hope for is find a company that's better off and can afford higher wages. |
