Crashing courses may help too... by kwyn 2004-06-23 15:36:15
I had this same problem my first quarter at UCSD. I found that an add card and a visit to the professor's office hours first week with a well-thought out (and usually practiced) request worked wonders. Rushing them the first day of class like the 200 other people who want to get into their section does not. Carefully read the policies for departmental wait lists, the rules can be really tricky (and stupid). If you can, get in contact with your academic advisor and the department that the course you need is in. They'll usually be some help. Sometimes they're not though.

It seems like a lot of stress right now, but it'll work out. There's a huge drop/fail rate in freshman classes. I think ours was something lovely like 40-60%. Also, the first week of class is crazy with people adding and dropping. Most classes can be "crashed" by showing up when you're not enrolled and getting the professor to sign your add card (then taking it to the department, if necessary, and running it to the registrar too). I got my g-chem class by being online at the right time to sign up for an opening that wasn't even posted yet. Sometimes additional sections for highly impacted classes open up, too.

I'll pass on the single most important piece of advice I learned in college now: Keeping breathing at regular intervals. In and out, oot. It'll be okay.
