Alaska Flight 261: by Tomo 2004-06-23 15:06:57
Why accountants should never, ever, under any circumstances whatsoever, be permitted to have anything to do with service intervals.

And any that attempt to do so should be shot immediately, no questions asked.

The trim jackscrew that failed and caused the crash was designed to be inspected every 600 hours, and replaced every 2000 at most.
Alaska Airlines changed that to inspection every 2500 hours.

That's roughly equal to my estimate of the Mean Time Between Failures* - in other words, a 50% chance that it will fail before it gets inspected.

Completely unacceptable in anyone's book.

*This is a guess, as I am not an aeronautical engineer.
