It uses a high-frequency signal to utilize the part of the line that isn't used for voice communication. There is a special modem that establishes the connection across the line to the access server, and then either connects it to a home LAN or directly into the machine via Ethernet or USB, or some modems are installed into the machine itself. And yes, I do get hung up on this. Badly. :)
