They're migrating the NOC here at work to Linux, our security client based on Java runs better under Linux than Windows. So they've taken our new pretty decent Gateway workstations (with Legal copies of Win 2000 and Office XP) and are replacing them with older company computers. They're going legit by wiping their hard drives and putting the free Fedora COre 1 on them and giving it to us in the NOC. The legal gateway computers go to our new sales guys and such. Kinda sucks being severely downgraded hardware wise, but it's nice running Linux in the NOC. Anyway, they ran out of "older" computers, the only computers left are way too crappy, so I'm the only one in the NOC left with my gateway workstation, and Windows.
It's strange being the only one in the NOC running Windows, I'm like the minority now. There are about 8 of us total in the NOC. The funny thing is, it's me and one other guy that's the most knowledgeable in the NOC about Linux. Albeit, my specialty is Linux servers, and his was the Linux GUI, so he's technically better at helping us in the NOC than I am. I'm used to the CLI. Never messed w/ XWindows or Gnome or KDE or any programs that go with it. But now I feel when I get Linux eventually, I'll be behind everybody else, still learning new places to click and new settings and tricks and such, and they've already been there done that learned whatever. Seems like me and the other Linux guy should have been the first to be upgraded. Ohh well, Win 2000 for me for now. I'm offering to buy a cheap $350 computer and make it my workstation, they're looking into letting me. |
