The problem with involving the UN by wheresthefish 2004-05-11 14:32:30
is that they would be seen as a flag of convenience for the US and UK. The only credible UN force in Iraq would have zero involvement from either side, only then could they stand a chance of being seen as assisting Iraqis instead of serving US interests. This is unfortunately unfeasable as the backbone of UN military forces has always been supplied by the US. You could end up with the farcical situation of having the same units in the same positions being sent on patrol with blue berets rather than flak helmets. Our governments were quick to sideline the UN when it suited us, now we pay the price of destroying their credibility.

NATO really doesn't have any jurisdiction within the Middle East but I still rate their chances of success far higher than a force under the flag of the UN. The only other military powers that could possibly bring enough forces to bear to control the situation would be China or Russia. I sincerely doubt that China would ever get involved but Russia might be prepared to offer assistance. Form an allied NATO/Russian force with the bulk of the NATO units coming from France and Germany and round it out with specialist help from other NATO countries. Then you might have the sort of truly international force that could truly be called liberators rather than occupiers.

This is of course, never going to happen.
