You don't need to remember anything. LOAD "*",8,1 loaded the first file on the disk. Many (if not most) programs were designed to automatically run if they were loaded with the ',1' option.

LOAD "$",8 would load a directory listing into the BASIC program area which could then be viewed by LIST.

Why, oh why, can I still remember this?
