You mention that:
Television, as envisioned by Orwell, served only to keep people afraid of their actions, and keep them up to date on the most recent propaganda. The role of TV in seducing the populace into empty-headed lethargy seems like a glaring omission in light of today's world.
I would point out that Richard Bachman's (Stephen King's) book "The Running Man" also utilizes this aspect. In fact, there is a governmental requirement that every home have a TV, and it is an offense to "cut the cable."
This would also make an interesting compare/contrast book, IM(NS)HO.
