Rant of the day... by JG12004-05-11 08:49:57
  Doesn't sound too far off to me . . . by amanita 2004-05-11 10:10:50
We were in a wedding for some close friends a few years back, and the whole wedding party was barely on speaking terms with the bride by the time the thing was done. The financial obligations *alone* were staggering, and most of them were completely unexpected. Like the expensive dresses she picked ($500!) and the most expensive tuxes the rental shop had. Then her attendants were expected to pay for rooms at a really expensive hotel in Reno for her bachelorette party. I didn't go. Also, we all paid for hotel rooms for the main event. By the time you added in a shower gift and a wedding gift (and she registered at Restoration Hardware, no less!) we were all broke!

If she had been nice about the whole thing, it would have been easier . . . but she was spoiled and controlling. The whole thing really damaged a lot of friendships. *sigh*

My advice is to just explain to the bride that you're about at the end of your financial ability to participate. Then she has the choice of either toning down the expenses on your end, or allowing you to bow out gracefully. She may be cranky about it, but hey -- you said she barely recognizes you as a sister anyhow.

So no, you don't sound selfish. And the whole thing is why my sweetie and I had a big party with our friends and family, but NO attendants and NO fancy stuff. And everyone said it was the nicest wedding they'd ever been to.
