You have to start somewhere. Sagan made astronomy more or less comprehensible to millions of people who would otherwise have not had a clue.

Do you expect the networks to air a series on astronomy taught at the Doctorate level? That would rather limit the pool of potential viewers, wouldn't it? Sagan taught science at the common schmo level, and he was good at it.

Also, the comparison to "Hollywood history" is unfounded. Sure, he left out the difficult bits, but what he said was essentially correct. Simplification rather then outright lies and distortion. "Lies to children".
