Rant of the day... by JG12004-05-11 08:49:57

Being the bridesmaid-of-honor can either be a blessing or a burden. It sounds to me like it's a pretty significant burden for you. If your sister has a best friend who she had to pass over (because you're her sister), see if the best friend would be willing to co-maid-of-honor with you and share the costs and the honor.

Also, you have up to a year to get the bridal gift, so you can space your financial burden out a bit.

I had a friend who was very close to me at the time of my wedding, but her husband was also a close friend of ours, and they were always on a financial thin line (I later learned that their finances were fairly healthy, but that she was a budget stickler). I asked her to participate by singing at the wedding, and gave him a different (non-groomsman) task so that they wouldn't have to pay for two sets of formal wear for the event. I did have my bridesmaids buy their own dresses, but I also gave them each a $50 gift certificate to Victoria's Secret as a gift, and the jewelry for the wedding (which I made).

I swear, my sister's first wedding was carefully timed so that I would have to leave my last final exam for the semester and drive straight to the airport. The second one isn't going much better; I have a software release the day after I get back, and I'm sure everyone is going to be asked to work that weekend (sis lives out of town, so I won't be able to work, obviously).
