If memory serves, they had to remove the 'Melnibonean Mythos' and the 'Chthulu Mythos', after a lawsuit from Chaosium (who held the game rights to both at the time). I don't recall if they retained the 'Lankhmarian Mythos' or not (AFAIK, they had an agreement with Fritz Leiber's estate for it).

This wasn't the first time they had legal problems with copyrighted concepts; IIRC, Christopher Tolkien took TSR to court over the use of the words 'balrog' and 'orc' in the original 1974 edition. While the courts ruled that 'orc' had some prior use in Welsh (?) mythology, it was ruled that 'balrog' was the property of JRR Tolkien's estate. Since, by this time (1977), TSR had begun producing both the Dungeons and Dragons Basic Set and the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual, neither of which used the word, the only result was that it was (literally) whited out of the 1978 "Original Collector's Edition Boxed Set" reprints (much to the puzzlement of those such as myself who had a copy and didn't know why some sections were blanked out).

On a related note, here is my question:

Why are products relating to the original "Macross" series illegal to import into the US, even if they are licensed by Bandai?
