...Fredric Brown. He can sum up more in fewer words than any other writer I've ever encountered. Unfortunately, finding his stuff is a pain, since most has been out of print for decades. His detective fiction ("The Screaming Mimi" is one of my favorites) is also a great example of the hard-boiled pulp detective novel.
