The other part is that we still demonize alcohol consumption at all. When I didn't drink, it had nothing to do with my feelings about alcohol - it was strictly a matter of taste. I hadn't developed a taste for it.
Whenever I told people that I didn't drink, though, they would usually congratulate me like I had done a brave and smart thing.
THAT is a big part of the problem. Kids here _can_ drink when they are younger. Most such kids illegally procure alcohol in their high school years, in fact. They just don't usually have access to as much of it as you would once in college, nor do they have as much freedom from responsibility while living with their parents.
Kids going to college are coming from their years of strong rebellion against their parents' "oppressive rule" and suddenly finding out they can do anything they want. Enter alcohol.
If we'd drop or revise those stupid laws and change the way our society looks at alcohol, we'd definitely have much more responsible behavior amongst those who choose to drink.
Let youngsters have small amounts of wine with dinner, if they choose. Let high school kids have a couple of beers on weekends (we _do_ have good beers here, you bigot ;-P [just not the major brands]). Teach them to act responsibly with alcohol from a young age and we won't have so many delinquent adults (of all ages). |
