In my opinion, we don't have to bother finding a reasonable explanation why he knows Crud's mind. It's a comic strip, after all. I believe this is part of today's gag. As to what he's saying, here's how I interprete it: Pitr realizes that Crud thinks of - HIM. He would like to hope that someone else is meant - for example Kevin Costner - but he knows that it's too much to hope for. Maybe Illiad could confirm this (or deny it) as there is some discussion concerning this in the translation thread, too.
