Really now, if castration wasn't an acceptable word to describe the removal of the penis, why would he have been consistently translated that way?
And actually, the point as I read it wasn't that the penis was the source of a man's power, I'm not sure if Freud would have believed that or not. The important point was that it was visible, and specifically the visible difference between men and women. That's the sort of thing children notice, and Freud was very concerned with childhood conceptions. |
