Just because you don't think it should be a word, doesn't make it not a word, though. The reason it is in some dictionaries and not others depends on what type of dictionary it is. Your immediate dismissal of the dictionaries which disagree with your view as 'disreputable' is hardly a reasonable support for your point of view in this matter. Though it is true, of course that neither of the two in my latter post are professionally written. Whether or not they are professionally edited is of greater concern, I should think, though I don't know if they are.

The main difference, though, is that these dictionaries are descriptive. If a word's common usage has a given meaning, then the word has taken on that meaning in the american english language, regardless of what the editor of a prescriptive dictionary would prefer people use. Castration has commonly included removal of the penis since Freud's time.

The definition of gonad is irrelevant, since I didn't refer to it. Your reference to it is thus a non sequitur. And your implication that I am ignorant is uncalled-for, in addition to being incorrect in this particular instance.

Being misled by improper reliance on dictionaries is also common, which as you note, has no impact on its rightness or lack thereof.
