Right on, NOLAWitch!
Advice on a/b: Watch the going seasonal thing, though. Be sure it's right for you as well. I tried it. Once. Never again. I was such a raving brat, very hormonal, lots of mood swings, I will never do that again. There are other options, including the shot, if you get along with the side effects (which can include non-stop spotting OR no bleeding at all, depending on how your body reacts to it). There's also a new IUD out for women who have had at least 1 pregnancy-- it gradually adjust your hormones to the point where many women don't get their period at all.
On B: Non-bleached/chemicalized or re-usable hygeine products lessen the *amount* of bleeding. Commercial products have bleach and other poisonous chemicals to provoke bleeding (do we really think Tampax has any vested interest in selling fewer tampons?) Tampons are the worst offenders, as they come into the greatest contact with your "parts." Because they're considered an external product (what a joke), the companies are not required to list the ingredients and chemicals. Pads are slightly better and also have less toxic shock syndrome risk. Re-usable cotton pads or the "cup" are good alternatives if you can get comfortable enough with your body fluids to clean them correctly.
Obligatory FYOS statement: When I was 14, my mom had just gone through a debilitating bout with TSS, and I'd had my period for 3 years. Girls need to know this stuff as much as women. It is also possible to get TSS without using tampons. |
