For me I don't mind as long as it's darker. If there is too much contrast or the background is really bright I find it awful to read. One website I nearly wrote the author of because it was awful.. and well not just awful to read but the colour combo was gross and hard for normal people to read.(bright yellowy orange with a light yellow on top. Hard to pick the foreground from the back.) But the problem with my vision is also why 99% of websites I make have a black background and darker shades of other colours ontop. When my eyes are really bad I can take working on them like that. And when my eyes are quite bad I actually sit in my room with no light other than the monitor and rayban sunglasses that have the side blinder things on them. Probably whatever does it to my eyes is what makes it near impossible for me to play certain video games or watch imax for very long.(imax can make me throw up and some video games make me feel pretty close and rather disoriented)
