someone saying retard... my son is mentally handicaped, he's slow, etc he has a low iq... fine. he's well aware of that. Mentally handicapped doesn't always mean low iq... Not that you've said that just a personal point that while some pc drives me nuts because it goes over board some stuff the other way is also just plain insulting as well. I had the lady at job councelling talk to me like I'm 5. Despite a medical report infront of her saying flat out I had above average intellegence(actually more than one report did). She did this because it also said I had autism and other issues. I nearly told her off but I think my last test score made a point.(and yes the tests showed I had a very large diffrence in my reading comprehension vs my ability to spell... it was in their lingo expressive language problems aka I can't spell worth crud) I'm not a savant, I'm not an idiot, I'm a person who just happens to be diffrent. That causes me some difficulties yes but I'm far from an idiot(or idiot savant). And btw I don't find it politically correct or whatever to avoid saying someone is dumb if they have a low iq. Low iq isn't the same thing as being stupid/dumb. I've seen some high iq people do some not to bright things and some low iq do things that frankly suprised people that under estimated them.
Some pc correctness is around for a reason but there are extreams in both.
BTW neurological disorder is an umbrella statment. Many things fall under it. Including some of my other physical health issues. You could say verbal deficit but my speaking isn't as bad as my writing. Verbal deficit doesn't cover what it is wrong either. I have specific brain injury that caused it. I'm brain damaged(tho I suppose the nice way is saying "brain injury") and I don't see a need to be pc correct about it. My brain aside from being damaged is also structurally slightly diffrent from the majority of the population.(I had a PET scan and stuff as a kid. Also some studies show that others with autism have like structural diffrences)
Communication problems is again a broad term. It doesn't say whats wrong... I'm gibbled ... and I'm gibbled again due to brain damage in specific areas of my brain. That results in specific conditions and they aren't PC they just are what they are.
Learning disability is also a very broad term. It covers tons of things including genetically verifiable conditions. How do I know? Well as mentioned before I have lots of stuff in my family tree. I also had to do research to try to help my son. As well at last count I've had 5 nurses in my family. 3 of which were psych and other 3 did rotation on diffrent regular hospital wards. I've also got some training because of my kids and for other reasons.
Now if you grew up being swarmmed, beaten within an inch of your life, molested, raped, and otherwise tormented because your different trust me you'd not like the term retard either. I've lived through a living hell when small... something I'm quite thankful my own son doesn't quite have to see the same of. Tho someone molested him because he was diffrent and that child got molested because he was "just a retard" in the abusers mind... us "retards" are people too... and our only hate of the word is that hate filled sluring and cruelty that so many gave it in the past. Much like blacks dislike a certain term, chinese and other groups dislike other terms. I think there is such at thing as mentioned as going overly political correct... but I think people can find a happy medium.
I understand you might be frustrated and that is why you've blurbed out what you did... Anyways this is my little blurb back on certain terms. And also I understand why Mike might find a term of refrence offensive in a person describing him. I don't fully know what he went through as a kid but he lives only a few cities over and I know what I went through. As it stands I could sue the provincial government for what happened to me also what happened to my son. Lawsuits don't always solve issues. The systems changed and it's changed for the better... but for those of us that had to deal with things before the changes it did damage and some of us have associated certain terms with rather painful memories. I don't find that term offensive that Mike does tho my guess is he has good reason to be bugged about it. I'm outspoken on what I have and reason being is I remember all too well what can happen to people if others.(I knew a girl with a parital labotomy, who had got shock treatment and such at the school they wanted to send me to... she was also sterilized) While certain issues aren't common in canada anymore then are very common in other places so to stop them people have to speak up and help people understand... otherwise the pain we went through others have to live through to...(or not live in some cases one kid I know with autism in the US was killed by a therapist... other kids suffering from bullying and such have resuted in suicide or murder suicides... there is a variety of crap that can happen) |
