My favorite editor was SPE, and it ran in DOS (not even Windows). My new favorite editor is TextPad, which also supports RegEx search & replace. Neither one of them would allow you to use "proper" syntax, as they provided a dialog box in which to type each term.
"s/something/somethingelse/" is still totally foreign syntax to me, though. It is not even in the AWK manual. AWK defines "sub" as the way to replace substrings. Perhaps it refers to substring, perhaps to substitute. Either way, it's not the way _you_ do it - but it's still valid.
I've never actually run AWK on a *NIX system, only on Windows/DOS boxes.
So, as I said, you are assuming that he is using the RegEx style you are familiar with. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that you are deliberately assuming that IN ORDER to cause his statement to be wrong - in short, you are trying to pick a fight.
He isn't actually using RegEx at all. Just the substitute function, which is NOT a RegEx - please separate the concept of regular expressions from the concept of search and replace. |
