for an undergrad under 24 unless they are married or have some legal documentation separating them from their parents. Even as a 26 year old undergraduate who is considered independant, I still needed a cosigner for the private educational loan I took out. While I'm the primary loanbearer, my dad, as the cosigner, is responsible if I default. After 18 months of repayments he can then remove himself from the loan.
